Sunyata

I come from Qinghai, China, one of the epicentres of Tibetan culture. In this project, I took inspiration from my background and the central idea of Tibetan Buddhism—"Sunyata"—everything in the world comes and goes. Only one's true nature is eternal. The Tibetans also developed the art form of Thangka from meditating on "Emptiness". This process of deriving art from ideas also inspired me. I recorded this "moving process of thought".

I imitated the morphological distortion of the flow of thought, blurred the traditional elements in Thangka, and blended them into images through overlapping. I broke the layout of putting gods in the centre and created new imagery combining the modern to the classical.

Then I mixed traditional Thangka material with patterned fabric and modified the conventional Thangka artistry of piled embroidery, creating a new texture effect.

I changed the traditional appearance of Thangka but retained its appeal—the power of helping one listen to their heart again. I tried to guide the viewers into the space of "Emptiness" and, therefore, back to their inner worlds of true selves.
